On Wednesday, May 4th, two featured programs of TCNJ’s Center for Community Engaged Learning and Research will be highlighted during the College’s Celebration of Student Achievement (CoSA). This annual event demonstrates “the research, scholarship and creative activity of TCNJ students from all disciplines. The event will include paper presentations, poster sessions, art exhibitions, and other products of student work.” In its 19th year, the CELR Center is proud to be a part of this acknowledgement of the hard and meaningful work of our TCNJ Bonner Community Scholars and the students and faculty members who have contributed to the community engagement initiatives of the College.
Two events will feature CELR Center programs: an Advanced Community Engaged Learning (ACEL) Luncheon and a Bonner Community Scholar Presentation of Learning.
The ACEL Luncheon, taking place from 11:30am-1pm in the Business Building Lounge, will highlight the projects that students and faculty members have incorporated into their upper-level, major-specific courses. The luncheon will start with a poster session of ACEL projects from:
- Sociology (Community, City, Suburb, taught by Diane Bates),
- Psychology (Counseling and Clinical Seminar, taught by He Len Chung),
- Interactive Multilmedia (Graphic Design, taught by Alan Brooks),
- Computer Science (Software Engineering, taught by Monisha Pulimood)
- Linguistics (American English, taught by Felicia Steele
Following the poster session, student and faculty teams will present their ACEL projects from this past semester, highlighting how upper-level courses can contribute valuable research and information to community partner organizations and provide enriching experiences for TCNJ students. The presentations will be:
- Megan Todd and Professor Deborah Hutton on Arts of the Islamic World
- Edward Guippone, Danielle Peterman, and Professor Bea Chiang on Cost Accounting
- Christine Makdisi and Professor Ann Warner Ault on Technology and Culture
ACEL experiences are course-based CEL activities in 200-level and above courses that complement the existing learning objectives of the course. Designed in close consultation between CELR Center staff and the course instructor, ACEL courses take course-specific skills and knowledge and apply them to address community-identified issues. ACEL experiences are generally 15-20 hours of community engagement, and a substantial course assignment is built around the CEL experience. From 12pm-1pm in Education Building 212, The Bonner Community Scholar Presentation of Learning will highlight the service experiences of graduating Bonner Scholars and what they have learned from their experiences over the past four years. As part of the student development model incorporated into the Bonner Scholar framework, the presentation of learning is intended to provide Bonner Scholars an opportunity to reflect on the 1200+ hours of service they have done over the past four years and its impact upon themselves and the community.
In addition, some Bonner Scholars merged their disciplinary coursework with their Bonner Scholar experience, integrating their Bonner experience into a capstone proejct for their major. The times and locations of their presentations are included on the flyer posted here. For more information, please contact Paula Figueroa-Vega at pfiguero@tcnj.edu or 609.771.2217.
